Consonants

p d(t) t(tʲ) tz(ts) tc(tʃ) z(s) s(sʲ) c(ʃ) f l(ɬ) y(ɬʲ) x m r(n) n(nʲ) j(ɲ)

Palatised consonants only occur before high vowels Stops were probably voiced in between voiced segments but fricatives and affricates weren’t

Vowels

i u e o

4 vowels which can occur in short/long (ī) and long nasal (î) forms all long vowels also have overlong forms indicated by adding ':' though these are extremely rare. The contrast between nasal and non nasal vowels was lost before coda nasals. Final vowels except in monosyllables ( i don't know of any languages in which monosyllables have only one vowel phoneme) (either just absolute final or all final vowels including ones with coda (i haven’t decided) have reduced to a schwa (spelled *a), their full value is restored in morphology. In general only the most common words lose vowels in inflected forms and so there loss can be considered irregular. Long vowels are usually present in open syllables through in a few extreme cases they are present in closed syllables.

Syllables

(C)V(C) syllable structure, All consonants can serve as a final coda. Intervocalic clusters are limited to homorganic nasal + stop or geminates. 2 vowels may occur in sequence in which case the second vowel is always short. All sequences of identical vowels have assimilated into long or even overlong vowels by now.

    • w > *f
    • l > *l (actually an unpalatised lateral fricative) /*y _F (actually a palatised lateral fricative)
    • j > *c (actually postalveolar sibilant)

14 Consonants

    • i/e/ə > *i
    • u/o/e:/o: > *u
    • a > *e
    • a: > *o

Long vowels develop from Vowel + Approximate clusters before other consonants.

Nasal vowels develop from the loss of *ŋ.

Final *i and *u are generally lost all other final vowels are generally preserved.

Middle vowels are lost except in a few sporadic cases (this change happened before final vowels are lost since a preceding consonant cluster blocks syncope).

All vowels in final syllables reduce to *ə (spelled *a) which unreduces in morphology.
