Thanks for doing this. A couple questions:

  • Would any of Cedh's proposed revisons (toward the bottom of the Maps article) change the climate map appreciably? At the least, I think our continent should be further south, so the Aiwa valley is centered around maybe 30 N instead of 40 or whatever it is there.
  • The idea has been bandied about of making our continent wider to the west. Maybe this would help the Aiwa and nearby regions keep up with the other continents? On the other hand, a period of foreign colonial domination could add interest to our later history.

- In his first proposal, I think it just tilts things slightly. Shouldn't have any major effect on zones, I don't think. Biggest effect will be in the north-east, which will be rather warmer (and in fact I'm probably being optimistic not putting boreal in there given the latitude and a probably cold current).

- I can't load his second proposal at the moment.

- I don't think it should be moved further south. At the moment the valley is in the 30-45 bracket, I think, which is around Northern China. Northern China did fairly well for itself historically. Don't forget, for most of history Northern China was the populated and prosperous part of China. In Qin China, population density in some northern areas reached 25 times higher than in the south. It was only with the replacement of foxtail millet and wheat with rice cultivation that the south outpaced it. We're also on a par with Turkey (one of the oldest agricultural areas on Earth) and Greece (the most populated place in the world at one point (and perhaps we could see the shift from Ndak to mountain Daiadak as analogous with the shift from the middle east to mountainous pastoral Greece)).

Moreover, moving it south would effect Saladland, or whatever we're calling it. At the moment, there's a nice North China / South China duality between them - move them ten degrees further south and suddenly they're in a jungle.

- I'm not convinced that widening the continent further would help (and it has already been widened). After all, they're fairly separate zones, the east and the west.

- Moreover, I don't see why the Aiwa needs to be dominant. Sure, we've hypothetically given it a far-distant colonial offspring, but that's a long way in the future, and anything could happen by then. It could even be the only colony the area managed to produce.

All it does mean is that we should be careful about racing forward in this area until we have worked out the neighbouring areas to some degree. The Western and Salad-relish zones will probably soon be playing a larger role, and I think that that perfect Far Eastern environment is going to produce something that will at the very least be sending ships to the Aiwa before too long.

[Not only is there a huge mediterranean coastline, there's also a nice black sea/caspian climate facing it, and a huge temperate zone too - those forests will probably be barbarian at first, which will impede imperialism on the south coast, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're conquered and eventually they'll produce a great northern-european culture. [I mean in terms of setting, not necessarily cultural details].

For what it's worth, I would suggest a giant Roman Empire conquering the entire continent and sending ships to the west, gradually falling apart due to internal tensions (there must be a lot of different rival cities on that south coast), and developing into city states. Later countries, probably northern, will start colonising. But that's just an idea.
